Unseen AHS

What is Unseen AHS?

Unseen AHS is a photography project by four friends. The idea is to show the beauty of the dustiest, most mysterious corners of our decaying high school, while integrating these visuals with each of our individual aesthetics and ideas.

The Beginning

Our hometown is very liberal, middle class, and hipstery, which is why the condition of our high school is so surprising. Last updated in the 1970s, its early 1900s facade looks historical, but the weird corners and depths of the basement can be best described as gritty, decaying, and decrepit. This mysterious underworld has fascinated us throughout our time at the school, and we are a bit disappointed that the upcoming rebuild will destroy this character and decaying beauty of the building. At an art club meeting in September 2017, we found out that the weird old basement interested all of us, and decided to create this project to make art about it. And so, we began planning.

What Unseen AHS Became

Although it might appear to be  a half-baked attempt to get into the infamous AHS clocktower, Unseen AHS is something much greater. As the final website comes together, it's pretty much what we had expected it to be, but we had not expected to still be working on it in 2019. Last year, throughout our Junior year, Unseen AHS became a test of our time-management skills, our priorities, and our passions. Since this was an entirely self-driven project, we decided against deadlines, and instead to work on it when we could, taking breaks whenever schoolwork was high or motivation was low.

In order to get some publicity, Katja and Annie did a small shoot with Mr. Moore in the basement, we picked a name, and we made a pitch website, an instagram, and a mailing list. For us, Unseen AHS was not just taking photos, but it was planning, audience building, directing, modeling, editing, writing, researching, lots of website building, and a little bit of friend-making. Through this, the four of us learned more about our individual strengths and passions, as you can see by viewing each of our bodies of work. In the end, we were able to get loads of people interested and involved, and we each grew and learned a lot about ourselves and our abilities as creators.
